Hillel - Passover Seders

All-

Passover is rapidly approaching! Here are some tips as well as a list
of Passover seders to which we have been invited so far.

Money should not prevent you from celebrating Passover. Thanks to a
generous donation, Hillel will cover the cost for any Jewish student
who needs it in order to attend Passover seders - please contact me
about this before April 1st if you are interested.

Dining Service:
If you contact the manager of the dining hall you eat at,
historically they have been very willing to accommodate people's
requests, by either making sure suitable items are available or, at
least at the UDCC, have been willing to specially prepare food for

Ames Seders:
The Hillel Seder will be held Monday, April 2nd at 7:00 PM in the
Schilliter and University Village Community Center. Glatt Kosher,
Cost: Free. Please RSVP to Michelle Garland ( mgarland@iastate.edu )
BEFORE Sunday, March 25th. This seder partially funded by GSB.

The Ames Jewish Congregation will be having their seder on Tuesday,
April 3rd at 5:30 pm at the synagogue. Space is limited to 50 people.
Everything except the Brisket will be kosher. RSVP BEFORE Saturday,
March 24th. Attached is the flyer with more information.

Des Moines Seders:
Rabbi Meir Klein is hosting a student seder at Beth El Jacob
synagogue both nights of Passover at 8:20pm. Kosher, Free for
students. RSVP to Rabbi Klein ( rabbimeirklein@gmail.com ) - no
deadline set, but the sooner the better.

Anti-Semitism in the 21st Century

Hey all,

Tomorrow (Monday) there will be a movie called "Anti-Semitism in the
21st
Century: The Resurgence," followed by a discussion. This documentary
explores
the roots of anti-Semitism and examines why it flourishes today. The
program
is free and will be in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union at 7:00pm.

Reserve a place at AJC's Tu B'Shevat seder by Wednesday, January 31.

You are invited to AJC's annual Tu B'Shevat seder to be held on Friday,
February 2, at 8:00 p.m. Rabbi Rosenbloom and John Pleasants will lead our
celebration of Shabbat and the new year of the trees. We'll enjoy the
bounty from trees -- fruits and nuts -- along with 4 glasses of wine (or
grape juice). Come and share this special occasion with your AJC family.

We need to know how many people plan to attend so we can set up enough

Simchat Torah

Rabbi Jacobson, a Chabad Rabbi in Des Moines, has invited any student
who wants to spend Simchat Torah with him and his congregation. If
you are interested, they are starting at 8pm on Saturday night, they
will also be doing services sunday morning for the holiday. Rabbi
Jacobson is the one who owns the Kosher Deli in Des Moines, so there
will be plenty of good food to help celebrate! His number is (515)

High Holydays [Hillel]

Guys-

I hope your semester is getting on to a good start. The High Holydays are fast approaching, so here is the Ames Jewish Congregation's schedule of events for Rosh HaShannah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. If you are interested in going to any of the services and need a ride, please contact Shayna or myself. (Contact info below). There are also 4 synagogues in Des Moines- Chabad, Orthodox, Conservative and Reform, all of whom would be more than happy to have you attend.

Also, now is a good time to talk to your professors about Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur. Even the most intimidating of professors are often very understanding about religious holidays, so don't be afraid to ask! If you have classes that have homework that is due on Monday, you might be able to get an extension by explaining how the new year is going to take up the entire weekend, until Sunday evening. And of course you should have no problems with professors making allowances for Yom Kippur on the Monday of the 2nd. If you do have problems with your professors being less than understanding, let me know immediately and we will get something worked out!

Apples to Apples

I hope your spring semester has gotten off to a good start. For our first
event of 2006, we are celebrating Tu B'Shevat with a little Apples to Apples,
and perhaps other games. Also, there will be food! If you would like to bring
something, that would be great.

Event Details:
When: Sunday, January 29th at 7pm
Where: 320 Hillcrest Avenue Apt. #22
Directions: From campus, go three blocks west from Friley on Lincoln Way.
Turn RIGHT on Howard Avenue. (if you pass State Av, you went too far) Go
north three blocks. Make a LEFT on West St. You will see twin apartment
buildings on your immediate right.

High Holidays

To ring in the New Year, we will be having something of a “Rush Hashanah”
celebration this Sunday, the 2nd of October at the Sloss House on campus from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. We will have a main course of some sort provided, and we would ask that those in attendance bring something to share with the rest of the group. The main course at this time has not been determined but we will provide something satisfactory to the more restrictive dietary requirements of the group. Despite its being Kosher, Giraffe will not, in fact, be served. Although with a neck that size I would anticipate Kosher slaughtering would not be particularly tricky if we were to ship it off to the skilled hands of Postville. We will hopefully have good turnout, despite the late notice, so that we can discuss what we are all planning on doing for these holidays and how the organization of Hillel can best facilitate their being actuated. Contact friends and have them come along to compensate for the short preparatory time! We will also at this time try to collect information for carpooling for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Some of our membership would be more comfortable observing with the Ames Jewish Congregation, and others with the orthodox or conservative services in Des Moines. Given the restrictions on travel that the holiday will impose, people may need lodging if they are to observe in other cities, and hopefully we will be able to find some way to organize that for Yom Kippur. The rabbis of the congregations in Des Moines have shown a great amount of interest and volition in catering to the interested
I.S.U. Jewish population, so we should exploit that in ways that are mutually satisfactory. Finally we were hoping to again build a Sukkah somewhere on or near campus. This would provide a good opportunity to increase community awareness both individually with passersby, and perhaps through media outlets as well, since much of the journalistic coverage we have had this year has had to deal with somber and/or polarizing events. A Sukkah-building would presumably be a relatively neutral discussion point amongst ourselves (not building it under a tree this year to maintain Kosher) and amongst the community (what IS that thing?).

Pita-Pita Meeting 9/18/05 FREE FOOD
